RD Spotlight: Mosadi Brown
Meet Mosadi Brown, a Canadian RD with a client-centered approach and how she incorporates EatLove PRO as part of her practice.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself, your practice, and specialty.
My Background
Mosadi Brown, BA, BASc, MEd, RD, CDE is a Registered Dietitian in private practice. Mosadi has an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and an Honors Bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition from Western University. She went on to complete a Comprehensive Graduate Dietetic Internship Program from London Health Sciences Centre in London, ON, Canada. After gaining extensive practice experience, Mosadi obtained her Master of Education in Adult Education with a focus on chronic disease education and support in the community. She holds certifications as a Certified Diabetes Educator and Certified Craving Change Instructor.
How I got started
Nutrition and wellness have always been important to me. I began by pursuing studies focused on nutrition and fitness since these are areas that I am passionate about in my own life. I then pursued nutrition for health and wellness in the community as a basis for my career with the core of ‘walking the talk’ which overlaps my personal and professional life. As I advanced in my career, I developed extensive practice experience as a Health Care Provider, Educator, and Facilitator in the areas of counseling, behavior change, emotional eating, and education on a variety of food and nutrition-related topics in community health and private practice settings.
My approach
As a Registered Dietitian — Mosadi’s focus is on educational and behavioral approaches to support sustainable changes for healthy eating. Mosadi specializes in nutrition care for heart disease, weight loss, weight gain, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (cholesterol), metabolic syndrome, emotional eating, gastrointestinal disorders, food allergies and intolerances, vegetarian diets, sports nutrition, nutrition for an active lifestyle, group education/ workshops/ seminars, pregnancy (pre and post), management of nutrition-related health problems, diabetes/pre-diabetes/diabetes prevention, and nutrition for overall health.
Many people know what to eat but do not necessarily do what they know. Through Nutrition and Wellness with Mosadi Consulting, dietitian services are provided by addressing person- and family-centered care, group education, support and wellness programs to address barriers and strategies to overcome barriers to achieve one’s nutrition and wellness goals. The aim is to aid others in achieving optimal nutrition and health status as well as to prevent nutrition-related diseases.
2. What is your favorite part about being a Registered Dietitian?
I enjoy building a rapport with people in supporting them with their nutrition, health, and wellness needs. I also enjoy the relationships I build with colleagues as I expand my business through a variety of partnerships. To me — being a successful practitioner goes beyond the technical skills required to get here (and yes, it is a lot of hard work!) — it is also about creating that “know, like, and trust” factor with others. If you have both combined then you have the keys to the kingdom!
3. How do you utilize meal-planning in your practice? How do you market it as part of your business?
I offer meal planning as part of my regular consults and also as part of my packages. My clients have the option to book sessions a la carte. After they complete their initial 90 minute nutrition and lifestyle assessment, the second session is 60 minutes. That 60 minute session is for a review of goals, recommendations and treatment protocols from the initial session as well as to do meal planning. My clients can also opt to book a meal planning session by itself, which is also 60 minutes. I have a separate set of assessment questions if the meal plan session is booked on its own so that I can get a better idea of:
- My client’s relationship with cooking, so that I can provide meal ideas that are realistic and achievable.
- Look at foods liked and not liked so that I can set aside my own preferences and really listen to my clients about what foods they like and dislike.
- Lifestyle — such as eating out, what time of the day they find it most difficult to eat healthy, do they mind having leftovers throughout the week, what they eat in a typical day so that I can match the meal plan and recipe suggestions to their current lifestyle, not the lifestyle that I hope they will have after working with them (better for adherence and engagement!)
These questions are built in for packages, and stand alone if scheduled on its own.
I market meal planning as a service to extend beyond my nutrition and lifestyle assessment with the client, as part of my packages, and as a stand-alone service.
4. What are your favorite features on EatLove? How has it changed your job on a day-to-day basis? How has it impacted your clients?
I like that EatLove is quick and efficient to use. As a busy practitioner utilizing EatLove saves me a lot of time in creating meal plans. All I have to do post-assessment is plug in their demographic information, anthropometrics, clinical condition, food preferences, and dietary restrictions and EatLove does the rest by conjuring up a variety of individualized meal plans to choose from!
The impact that it has had on my clients it that they find EatLove very interactive.
Unlike meal plans that are created manually and tend to be more static (such as a set menu within a 7 day time frame), EatLove can be extended or shortened time-wise — they can swap out recipes and menus so that there are more choices, and is tailored to their individual needs.
Fun Facts:
- What’s your favorite food? Spaghetti! Preferably with meatballs and garlic toast.
- What’s your go-to quick weeknight meal? Oven baked jerk chicken with roasted vegetables, or stovetop curry with rice and salad.
- Food philosophy? Food as medicine — to heal and to uplift. Related to this is viewing food as a built-in lifestyle component for overall health — never a “diet”! This is why I do a comprehensive nutrition and lifestyle assessment so that I can do a thorough review of their health, nutrition, and wellness history. That way, I am getting more integrative information that I can apply to their nutrition care plan.
